Yesterday, driving down our driveway, I spotted a Blue Heron hanging out in the retention pond that is between our driveway and the neighbor's driveway. It routes water runoff around a cement wall in and out of the ditch that empties all of the runoff into a little creek that runs through our development. It is a habitat for frogs, and I actually saw some small fish in the ditch when I went to get mail the other day. As an aside, many of our streams are habitat for salmon fry. There are actually signs by the road near streams that say "Fish Crossing." Interesting, as I've never actually seen a fish walking across the road! Ha. Anyway, a heron nearly wiped out our pond a year or so ago of our goldfish. Our pond is right next to the house, and we had never had a problem with racoons, or herons.
Blue Heron
We've restocked our pond and now keep an eye on it. We also have a decoy. Take a look. Apparently, herons will respect another heron's territory and leave it alone. It was suggested that the decoy be moved occasionaly, to hopefully fake out the real Herons. So far, so good.
